Wild Fires Taking Toll on Prathersville Area

Prathersville, Pa- The spell of hot, dry weather that has held the area in its grasp for the last few weeks is taking its toll on grasslands and firefighters.

Saturday, in the wake of 15- to 25-mph winds and a high temperature of 99 degrees, fire protection agencies from across the area responded to 16 calls.

Moore Leads Fresno Pacific to Second Round

Tulsa, Ok- Fresno Pacific shot over 50 percent from the field during an 81-56 victory over Springfield College in the opening round of the NAIA Division 1 Basketball Tournament Thursday night.

Pacific was led by superstar Power Forward Kareem Moore. Moore gave Pacific a dominant 24 point and 11 rebound performance, which was good for a game high in each category.

Former Air Force Fighter Pilot Dies at 67

Springfield, Pa- Former United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Ronald H. Lache of Springfield died of lung cancer yesterday at his home. He was 67 years old.

St. Joseph Shooting Rampage Claims Lives of Two

St. Joseph, Mz- A St Joseph’s police officer and an unidentified gunman were killed in a shooting rampage near Cavalry Baptist Church yesterday. Three others were injured.

The shooting began on 22nd street at Frederick. Officer Bradley Arn (see: photo left), 28, was the first to arrive on the scene. His car was riddled with at least seven shots by the gunman, one of which entered through the rear window fatally wounding Arn and sending his vehicle into a tailspin according to police.

Lenoir School Board Candidates Talk Overcrowding

Lenoir, Pa- As students continue to overpopulate Lenoir School District classrooms, senior citizens worry that their purse strings could be greatly affected by proposed solutions to the problem.

School board candidates took their campaigns to the Lenoir Retirement Community Center, to discuss potential fixes to the overcrowding issue on Tuesday night.

Former Auburn Quarterback Cam Newton is soon to be one of the richest rookies in the NFL. Newton and Under Armour recently finalized terms on the largest endorsement deal for a rookie in league history. Sources claim that the contract will pay more than $1 million per year, surpassing the previous landmark deal given to Reggie Bush in 2006.

Big endorsement deals for yet-to-be proven professionals may seem a new phenomenon in advertising today, but the business model of getting a star while they are young and still inexpensive is actually nearly 25 years old.

Fire Kills 15 Horses at Lincoln Downs Race Track

Springfield, Pa- Police suspect foul play in a barn fire that killed 13 thoroughbred and two saddle horses at the Lincoln Downs Race Track here early yesterday morning, one day before the opening of race season.

Two of the ten horses that escaped the inferno fled with fire covering their backs. Several rows of charred wooden supports were all that was left of the one story wooden structure, which smoldered from 4:00am until about noon.
